The ultimate solution to unions staying relevant globally is what the Wobblies proposed, organize workers everywhere in the world. Individuals also need to change their thinking about having common cause with other workers.
Everyone does what he has to to survive economically. So, we do what we have to now and work for better conditions in the workplace. Then workers have more choices and opportunities than mere survival.

For inspirational scientific thinking, I recommend taking a look at the writings of George Boole and Claude Shannon. These gentlemen fall into my top twenty favorites with Michael Faraday, Johannes Kepler, Leibniz, Newton, etc. leading the group.
Other Heroes of mine:
George Washington Carver,
David Livingston,
William Wilberforce,
George Washington,
and mathematicians/scientists--Blaise Pascal, Al-Kwarizme, Charles Babbage (with Ada Lovelace), Aryabhata, Pierre de Fermat, Leonhard Euler, Nikola Tesla, Enrico Fermi, Leo Szilard, Edward Teller, etc.

I would like to be union, unfortunately I took work more to keep from sinking, which I imagine is a common problem.
